Bag Style Selection Guide

Pouch Types: Match Your Bag Style to the Right Packaging Machine

Every flexible package falls into one of six pouch types — stand-up doypack, 3 side seal sachet, 4 side seal stick pack, back seal pillow, side gusset bag, or flat bottom box pouch. Each demands a specific machine class: VFFS for rollstock-formed bags, premade bag fillers for converted pouches, dedicated rotary fillers for spout pouches. Pick your pouch below to see the matching ShengWei catalogue, capacity range, and bag cost trade-offs.

Six Bag Styles

Six pouch types we pack — and the machines that make them.

Every retail flexible package belongs to one of these six structural categories. The seal pattern (where the seams sit) and the bag bottom (flat, gusseted, or self-standing) decide which packaging machine can produce it. Click any pouch for compatible machines, capacity ranges, and material recommendations.

Selection Framework

How to choose the right pouch in 4 questions.

Pouch selection is a four-question sequence. Each answer eliminates two or three formats and narrows the matching machine catalogue. Work through them in order before requesting a quote — it cuts our reply time in half.

  1. 01

Does the bag need to stand on shelf?

Yes (retail self-display) → Stand-Up Pouch, Flat Bottom, or Gusset Bag — all hold their own shape when filled.
No (cartoned or strip-hung) → 3 Side Seal, 4 Side Seal, or Back Seal pillow.

  2. 02

What is the fill weight per bag?

    Under 5 g → 3 or 4 Side Seal sachet, stick pack.
5 g – 1 kg → all six base formats viable; pick by shelf strategy and bag cost.
1 kg – 10 kg → Gusset Bag or oversized Stand-Up Pouch — smaller styles deform under heavy fill.

  3. 03

    What is the target output?

Under 60 bags/min → premade bag formats (Stand-Up, Flat Bottom, Spout) work; bag cost is the trade-off.
60 to 500 bags/min → switch to VFFS-formed bags (Back Seal, 3 / 4 Side Seal, Gusset). Premade bag fillers physically cap around 60 ppm — bag pickup time is the bottleneck.

  4. 04

Do you need any structural add-ons?

Reclosable zipper → Stand-Up, Flat Bottom, or Gusset Bag (premade bag filler with zipper station).
Vacuum or one-way coffee valve → Stand-Up Pouch or Gusset Bag with a vacuum chamber.
Spout and screw cap → spout pouch on a dedicated rotary filler (SW-CCS6).

Beyond the Six Bases

Pouch sub-formats and add-ons.

Six common sub-formats combine a base pouch with a structural add-on or special seal pattern. None is a separate bag type — they are variations of the six base shapes above, produced on the same machine class with an optional accessory station.

Zipper Pouch

A reclosable plastic zipper welded between the top seal and the product compartment. Standard on Stand-Up, Flat Bottom, and Gusset bags for retail food, pet food, ground coffee, and refill-pack detergent. Adds 8 to 15% to bag cost and requires a zipper-handling station on the premade bag filler.

Premade Bag Filler →

Vacuum Pouch

Air-evacuated and heat-sealed pouch for fresh meat, cheese, seafood, sous-vide ready meals, and oxygen-sensitive powders. Requires PA/PE laminate (puncture and oxygen barrier) and a vacuum chamber sealing station. Base bag is usually 3 Side Seal or Stand-Up.

SW-130ZK / 160ZK Vacuum Machine →

Stick Pack

Long narrow 4 Side Seal sachet, typically 20 mm × 100 mm, for single-serve instant coffee, sugar, electrolyte drinks, jelly sticks, supplements, and pharma sachets. Multi-lane VFFS machines run 6 to 24 lanes in parallel — peak output above 1,000 sticks per minute on a wide-frame line.

SW-2830A Multi-Lane VFFS →

K-Seal Stand-Up

Premium doypack variant with diagonally cut and sealed bottom corners — wider, more stable base than a standard stand-up. Popular in Northern European and Japanese retail for premium coffee, single-origin tea, and high-end pet treats. Same machine class as standard doypack — only the bag converter differs.

Premade Bag Filler (K-Seal Ready) →

Spout Pouch

Stand-up pouch with an injected plastic spout and screw cap for controlled liquid dispensing — juice, yogurt drinks, ketchup, sauce, hand soap, refillable detergent, motor oil. Filled and capped on a dedicated rotary multi-station machine that cannot share a line with non-spout pouches.

SW-CCS6 Spout Pouch Machine →

Shaped / Die-Cut

Pouch cut to a non-rectangular outline — bottle silhouette, animal shape, custom logo cutout — for premium beverages, kids' snacks, and promotional or gift packaging. Always premade (die-cut at the converter), filled on a standard premade bag machine.

Standard Premade Bag Filler →
Pouch-to-Machine Mapping

Which machine class makes each pouch?

Three machine classes produce flexible pouches commercially: VFFS forms the bag from rollstock film and fills in one continuous pass, premade bag fillers load pre-converted bags from a magazine, and dedicated rotary fillers handle spout pouches. A fourth class — horizontal flow wrap (HFFS) — wraps a pillow pouch around a discrete solid item.

Class 01

VFFS — From Rollstock Film

Forms the bag from a flat rollstock film, fills, and seals in one continuous cycle. Lowest film cost per bag, highest line speed (up to 500 bpm), but limited to the bag styles a forming tube can produce.

Class 02

Premade Bag Filler — Loads Converted Bags

Picks pre-converted bags from a magazine, opens, fills, optionally adds a zipper, and seals. Higher bag cost than VFFS but unlocks premium shapes — stand-up, flat bottom, K-seal, die-cut — that a forming tube cannot produce.

Class 03

Dedicated Spout Filler — Capped Liquid Pouches

Rotary multi-station machine dedicated to spout pouches. Picks the spouted bag, opens, fills the liquid, threads and torques the cap, then ejects to a conveyor. Cannot run non-spout pouches on the same line — budget for both if you need format flexibility.

Class 04

HFFS — Pillow Wraps Around Solid Product

Horizontal flow wrap (HFFS) wraps a back-seal pillow pouch around a discrete solid item — biscuit, soap bar, cake, ice pop, hardware. Not a pouch filler in the granular or liquid sense, but the dominant machine class for unit-pack confectionery and bakery.

Film & Laminate

Pouch film and laminate reference.

The pouch shape constrains the film thickness and laminate structure you can run. Heavier bags (gusset, flat bottom, large stand-up) need thicker laminates for panel rigidity; light sachets and stick packs use the thinnest single-layer films. Match the barrier to your product's shelf-life target — your bag converter will spec the exact lamination.

Film / Laminate Thickness Barrier Best Pouch Types
PET / PE 60–80 µm Moisture only Sachet, stick pack, low-shelf-life snacks
PET / AL / PE 80–110 µm Full barrier (O₂, moisture, light, aroma) Coffee, tea, dried herbs, milk powder, supplements
PET / VMPET / PE 70–100 µm High barrier, lower cost vs aluminum Snacks, nuts, pet treats, instant drinks
PA / PE (vacuum) 90–130 µm Puncture + oxygen barrier Vacuum meat / cheese / ready meals
Kraft / AL / PE 110–140 µm Full barrier + premium look Specialty coffee, premium tea, organic snacks
Mono-PE (recyclable) 80–120 µm Moisture + limited oxygen EU sustainable retail (any pouch shape)

Frequently Asked

Pouch & Machine Selection FAQ

How do I decide between VFFS and a premade bag filler?

Go with VFFS when you need above 60 bags per minute, want the lowest cost per bag, and your pouch shape is back seal, 3 side seal, 4 side seal, or gusset bag. Switch to a premade bag filler when shelf appeal matters (stand-up doypack, flat bottom, K-seal), when you need a built-in zipper or vacuum chamber, or when output stays below 60 ppm. Most ShengWei customers eventually run both — VFFS for high-volume SKUs, premade fillers for premium retail lines.

Can the same packaging machine make multiple pouch types?

Within the same machine class — yes, with format change parts. A VFFS swaps between back seal, 3 side seal, and 4 side seal by changing the forming tube and sealing jaws (4 to 8 hour changeover). Premade bag fillers run stand-up, flat bottom, and K-seal bags from the same machine because the bag-handling motion is similar. You cannot switch between machine classes — VFFS and premade bag fillers are physically different machines.

What is the total cost difference between VFFS and premade lines?

VFFS machines have higher capital cost (typically USD 30k–80k for a complete line with weigher and conveyor) but cut bag cost by 30 to 50% versus pre-converted pouches. Premade bag fillers cost less upfront (USD 18k–55k for ShengWei rotary models) but each bag costs more. Break-even is usually around 1 to 2 million bags per year — above that, VFFS pays back faster. We can run a TCO calculation for your specific volume during the quote stage.

How long is a typical changeover between pouch formats?

VFFS: 4 to 8 hours when changing the forming tube plus sealing jaws (e.g. back seal to 3 side seal). 30 to 60 minutes for fill weight only or simple width change. Premade bag fillers: 1 to 2 hours to switch bag width or shape, since the bag-handling mechanism stays the same. Multi-lane stick pack VFFS: 2 to 4 hours when changing lane count.

How do I know if my product needs a high-barrier film?

Check three product properties: (1) does the product oxidize and lose flavor (coffee, nuts, dried herbs)? — yes means oxygen barrier. (2) Does it absorb moisture and clump (sugar, milk powder, spices)? — yes means moisture barrier. (3) Is it aroma-sensitive (tea, coffee, spices)? — yes means aluminum or VMPET layer. If all three apply, use PET/AL/PE laminate. Your bag converter will spec the exact thickness based on shelf-life target.

What is your standard lead time and payment terms?

30 to 45 working days from deposit confirmation for standard configurations. Custom HMI language, non-standard voltage, or additional inline modules add 5 to 15 working days. Payment is 30% deposit on order, 70% balance against bill of lading copy before shipment (T/T). We accept LC at sight for first orders above USD 50k. Contact us with your spec for a confirmed production schedule.

Can the HMI language and voltage be customized for my country?

Yes. Standard voltages: 380V/50Hz (Asia, Europe), 220V/60Hz (North and Central America), 220V/50Hz (Russia, Middle East). HMI touch screens support English (default), Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, French, German, and Vietnamese on request — additional languages on quote. Specify both at the quote stage so we can confirm availability and lead time.

Do you provide remote and on-site engineer support?

Remote video technical support is free for the lifetime of the machine, in English, Spanish, Russian, and Mandarin. Most customers self-install with our installation manual plus remote guidance. On-site installation by a ShengWei engineer is available — typical engagement is 7 to 10 days on your factory floor, with travel and accommodation quoted separately.

Will ShengWei provide film and bag samples for testing?

Yes. We send pouch samples (premade or VFFS-formed in your target shape) and a recommended film laminate spec at the quote stage — courier expense at cost. For first-order customers above USD 30k, we run a free production trial with your actual product at our Guangdong factory and ship video evidence before deposit confirmation.

Can ShengWei recommend a pouch type if I only know my product?

Yes. Tell us the product (granular, powder, liquid, paste, or solid item), target fill weight per bag, target output (bags per minute), and the market you sell to (retail / industrial / single-serve / refill). We come back within 24 hours with a pouch recommendation, a film laminate spec, and the matching ShengWei machine from our catalogue. Send your product spec or message us on WhatsApp.
