Back-Seal Pillow Pouch — Quick Reference
| Definition | Pillow pouch with a single fin seam down the back (also called fin-seal) plus top and bottom seals — formed from a single roll of rollstock film, a common flexible format. |
|---|---|
| Best for | Chips, snacks, candy, frozen vegetables, bulk pillow packs — a maximum of 60–100 bags/min on the single-lane SW-2030 series, plus 10-column multi-lane configurations for higher throughput. |
| Machine match | ShengWei back-seal vertical form-fill-seal lines — SW-2030A / SW-2030B / SW-B10 and multi-lane variants. |
| Limitations | Not self-standing; no integrated zipper without secondary conversion; visible back seam at the rear of the bag — not the right choice for premium shelf-presence SKUs. |
What product categories use back-seal pillow pouches?
Back-seal pillow is the workhorse of high-volume retail — the format you see on every supermarket shelf for snacks, candy, frozen aisle, and instant single-serve. Low film cost per bag, high production speed, lightweight to ship. Below are three common back-seal product categories on ShengWei vertical lines.
Chips & Crisps
Potato chips, kettle-cooked chips, tortilla chips, extruded snacks. A common back-seal application. Metalized foil laminate for oxygen barrier; nitrogen flush extends shelf life. On the SW-2030A, an optional multi-head weigher can feed the forming tube.
Candy & Confectionery
Wrapped hard candy, chocolate pieces and other free-flowing confectionery. Sticky products need a sample test run first to confirm the configuration. SW-2030C tipping bucket handles irregular shapes that combination weighers struggle with. Transparent window in pouch face is standard for branded candy.
Frozen Vegetables
Frozen peas, mixed vegetables, edamame, corn, IQF blueberries. Freezer-grade film with strong cold-temperature seal integrity. Model selection depends on piece size and target output.
Seven ShengWei vertical lines produce back-seal pillow pouches.
Two production tiers serve different volume needs. The SW-2030 Series covers single-lane production for general retail SKUs at a maximum of 60–100 bags/min, with four filling-system variants. The Stick-Pack & Multi-Lane tier covers stick-pack and small-sachet SKUs with the ten-lane SW-B10 plus the SW-2830A jelly-stick and SW-2830B reciprocating machines — each model page gives its own rated speed.
Granule Filler
General-purpose back-seal vertical for granular products — chips, nuts, candy, sunflower seeds, dry snack mixes. A turntable volumetric cup doses each bag; an optional multi-head weigher can be added for weighed fills.

Auger Powder Filler
Motor-driven auger screw for back-seal powder packs — instant coffee, drip-coffee grounds, milk powder, supplement mix. An optional dust collector can be added for fine, airborne particles.

Tipping Bucket Filler
Tipping bucket dosing for irregularly-shaped product where multi-head combination weighers underperform — mixed shapes and other free-flowing product. Sticky products need a sample test run first to confirm the configuration. Bucket tips at the precise moment the bag is in position, releasing full dose without product hang-up.

Pendular Small Granule
Pendular feeder oscillates between two positions for small free-flowing granule dosing — sugar, salt, candy beads, sesame, coffee beans. Lowest CapEx in the SW-2030 series and most compact footprint, suitable for tight factory layouts and entry-level production.

Ten-Column Stick Pack
10 parallel lanes for extreme single-SKU throughput on stick packs and small sachets — instant coffee sticks, electrolyte sticks, sugar sticks, single-serve seasoning. All 10 lanes are filled each cycle; the 5–20 g metering range changes with the change parts fitted.

Jelly Bar Stick
Reciprocating jaw dedicated for elongated jelly bar sticks and similar long-format single-serve liquids and pastes — fruit jelly, energy gel, yogurt drink, frozen ice pop. Volumetric pump filler with anti-drip valve for clean cycle separation.

Reciprocating Stick Pack
Reciprocating jaw enables continuous high-speed production at smaller fill weights — coffee stick pack, sample sachet, mini-sachet, single-serve drink mix. PLC syncs film draw, fill, and seal in one synchronized cycle.

When to choose back seal vs alternatives
Back-seal pillow wins on speed and cost per bag, but lacks shelf presence and reseal options. If your SKU needs to stand on shelf, hold a printable face for branding, or reclose between uses, a stand-up doypack or 3-side seal sachet is the better fit. Honest trade-off below.
Back-Seal Pillow Pouch

FAQ
What’s the difference between back-seal, fin-seal, and pillow pouch?
All three terms describe the same physical bag — a flat pillow-shaped pouch with a single seam running down the back. “Back-seal” describes the seam location; “fin-seal” describes the way the seam protrudes (a small fin); “pillow pouch” describes the overall puffed pillow shape. ShengWei machines are sold as “back-seal vertical” in catalogue language, but they produce what English-speaking buyers call fin-seal or pillow.
Can back-seal pouches be nitrogen-flushed for shelf life?
Yes — nitrogen flushing (MAP) can be added as an option on ShengWei back-seal VFFS lines; confirm availability for your model and product at quote stage. When fitted, a nitrogen nozzle inside the forming tube displaces oxygen just before the bag is sealed, helping extend the shelf life of chips, nuts, and oxygen-sensitive food. Add the optional MAP (modified atmosphere) module at quote stage; spec our Guangdong factory for the integration drawing.
What films and laminates work with back-seal pouches?
BOPP/CPP for entry-level SKUs, PET/PE for general retail, PET/AL/PE foil laminate for high-barrier (chips, coffee, frozen), metallized PET for premium snack, and recyclable mono-PE for sustainable lines. Thickness range 50–120 micron. Sealing temperature, jaw pressure, and dwell time are adjustable per film type via HMI — ship a sample film roll to our factory contact for a sealing test. For a full comparison of how the back fin seal is formed under different sealing methods — and what influences seal integrity on high-speed pillow lines — see our bag sealing methods guide.
What’s the speed difference between SW-2030 and SW-B10?
The single-lane SW-2030 machines reach a maximum of 60–100 bags/min for general retail bags. SW-B10 ten-column reaches a maximum of 300 sticks/min for the whole machine. Pick SW-B10 when you have a single high-volume small-fill SKU (electrolyte stick) where parallelizing 10 lanes makes economic sense versus 10 separate single-lane machines.
Can I add a degassing valve to back-seal coffee bags?
Not on the back-seal pillow format — degassing valves require a flat printable face larger than typical back-seal can accommodate, and they are typically applied to stand-up pouches or gusseted bags by the bag converter.
Lead time and payment terms?
15–30 working days from deposit to FOB Shantou for any of the 7 SW-2030 / SW-B10 / SW-2830 series machines. ShengWei has built packaging machines in Shantou, Guangdong since 2008. Payment: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment by T/T. Deep-custom builds run longer — up to 45 working days, depending on complexity. Sea freight transit: SE Asia 7–14 days, Middle East 18–25 days, Europe 30–40 days.
What’s the typical cost per bag for back-seal?
Rollstock film is priced by area, so the cost per bag depends on bag size, film structure and barrier, print, MAP option, and order volume — ask your film supplier to quote your exact bag dimensions. Multi-lane machines like SW-B10 reduce labor cost per bag substantially compared to single-lane SW-2030 production at high volumes.
Can I run a sample test before commitment?
Yes. Ship 2–5 kg of your product (chips, candy, frozen, drip-coffee grounds, etc.) plus a sample film roll to our Shantou factory. ShengWei runs a packing test on the actual SW-2030 / SW-B10 / SW-2830 machine matching your spec, records video of the run, and shares results with recommended speed, fill, and seal settings. Reach our sales team via the contact page for the shipping address.
