What product categories use flat-bottom box pouches?
Premium retail SKUs that compete with rigid box and tin packaging on shelf appeal — the flat-bottom format gives five printable panels (front, back, two sides, plus the flat bottom face) for maximum branded surface. Below are the four largest flat-bottom product categories on ShengWei premade-bag rotary lines. For liquid baby food, juice, or capped product, see our spout pouch filling and capping machine as an alternative premium format.
Specialty Coffee
Single-origin whole-bean and ground coffee. Flat-bottom is the premium-tier coffee format above gusset bag — the rectangular shelf face with kraft-laminate print signals "specialty roaster" while a one-way degassing valve releases CO2 from fresh-roasted beans. SW-D series multi-head weigher.
Premium Loose-Leaf Tea
Loose-leaf green tea, oolong, herbal blend, matcha. Flat-bottom box pouch with metallized-foil interior is the dominant premium tea retail format — protects from light and oxygen while presenting elegantly on specialty grocery shelves. SW-D measure cup or multi-head weigher.
Sport Nutrition Powder
Whey protein isolate, casein, mass gainer, BCAA, pre-workout. Sport nutrition brands use flat-bottom pouches as a lighter, cheaper alternative to plastic tubs at 1–2 kg fill weights — same shelf presence as a rigid container but 80% lower film cost. SW-L series with auger filler.
Infant Formula & Baby Food
Infant formula, follow-on milk, baby food powder, toddler nutrition mix. Flat-bottom box pouch with high-barrier foil laminate replaces traditional tin cans for newer baby-care brands — premium shelf face, lighter to ship, recyclable mono-PE option emerging. SW-L series auger required for fine powder accuracy.
Three ShengWei machines fill flat-bottom box pouches.
All three are 8-station rotary premade-bag fillers built on the same SUS304 platform — same machine frame as our stand-up pouch line and gusset bag line, just configured with precise gripper positioning to handle the K-seal welded base of flat-bottom pouches. Pick by your fill type.
Granule Filler for Flat-Bottom Pouches
8-station rotary filler for granular product in flat-bottom box pouches — whole-bean coffee, loose-leaf tea, granola, dry roasted nuts, premium pet treats. Multi-head combination weigher (10 or 14-head) delivers ±1 g accuracy on 100 g to 2 kg fills. Three model variants 200 / 250 / 320 mm cover boutique to family-pack widths.

Powder Filler for Flat-Bottom Pouches
Servo-driven auger filler for fine powders in flat-bottom box pouches — whey protein, infant formula, milk powder, instant coffee, supplement mix. Anti-leak nozzle and integrated dust collection prevent contamination on light, airborne particles. The most popular flat-bottom configuration for sport-nutrition and baby-care brands.

Liquid Filler for Flat-Bottom Pouches
Piston pump filler for liquid and viscous products in flat-bottom box pouches — less common than granule / powder for this format, but used for premium gourmet liquid (cooking oil, condiment refill, specialty syrup). Anti-drip nozzle prevents spillage. CIP-ready stainless contact parts for daily wash-down.

When to choose flat-bottom vs alternatives
Flat-bottom box pouch wins on shelf face and premium positioning, but at the highest film cost in the premade-bag family. For lighter premium SKUs at smaller fills, stand-up pouch is more economical; for heavier fills above 2 kg, side-gusset is structurally stronger. Honest trade-off below.
Flat-Bottom Box Pouch
- Five flat printable panels — closest to rigid box
- Premium specialty coffee & tea format
- Sport nutrition & baby formula tub replacement
- Best for 100 g – 2 kg premium retail
- K-seal welded base + four side seams

- Lower film cost than flat-bottom
FAQ
What’s the difference between flat-bottom, K-seal, and block-bottom pouch?
All three are the same physical bag. Flat-bottom describes the rectangular flat base; K-seal describes the K-shaped welded seam pattern at the bottom corners that creates the rigid base; block-bottom describes the box-like shape when filled. ShengWei machines fill any premade flat-bottom bag from your converter regardless of which term your packaging team uses — bag converters typically use "K-seal" in technical specs while marketing uses "block-bottom" or "flat-bottom" on the bag itself.
Can I add a one-way degassing valve for whole-bean coffee?
Yes. Degassing valves are pre-applied to the bag by your bag converter (not by the filling machine) before bags are loaded. The SW-D series rotary fillers accept any flat-bottom pouch with or without valve — no machine modification needed. Specify "valve-ready bag" with your converter and ship samples to us for sealing test before commitment.
Why is flat-bottom more expensive than stand-up or gusset?
The K-seal welded base requires more film material and more bag-converter steps than a stand-up pouch’s simple folded gusset or a side-gusset’s side panels. Per-bag film cost runs roughly 20–35% higher than equivalent stand-up pouch at the same fill weight. For trial sizes and single-serve sachets, 3-side seal is the cheapest format. The flat-bottom premium is justified for high-shelf-presence SKUs (specialty coffee, premium tea, infant formula) where the rigid-box appearance commands a higher retail price.
Can I add a zipper to a flat-bottom pouch?
Yes — resealable zippers are common on premium loose-leaf tea, sport-nutrition powder, and infant-formula flat-bottom pouches. The zipper is added by your bag converter; SW-D / SW-L machines include a zipper-opening station as a standard module that detects, opens, fills below, and reseals the top. See the zipper pouch packing machine page for module configuration details.
What films and laminates work for flat-bottom pouches?
Kraft / PE laminate for premium specialty coffee & tea (kraft signals natural / specialty positioning), PET/AL/PE foil laminate for high-barrier baby formula and protein powder, metallized PET for lower-cost premium tea, and recyclable mono-PE for sustainable retail SKUs. Sealing parameters adjustable per film type via HMI. Ship sample bags to our Guangdong factory for a sealing test before commitment.
Can flat-bottom pouches replace traditional baby-formula tin cans?
Yes — this is one of the fastest-growing flat-bottom applications. New-generation infant-formula brands ship in flat-bottom foil-laminate pouches at 400 g to 1.2 kg, replacing tin cans for: 60–70% lower transport weight, lower CO2 footprint, recyclable mono-material option emerging. Filling requires SW-L series auger with food-grade contact parts and dust extraction (powder safety). For high-volume single-serve baby food sachets, see back-seal pillow pouch or vertical packing machine options. Consult our engineering team for the formula-grade configuration.
Lead time and payment terms?
Standard lead time 25–35 working days from deposit confirmation to FOB Shantou for any of the 3 SW-D / SW-L / SW-Y machines — the same window ShengWei has held since 2003. Payment: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment by T/T. Custom configurations (food-grade contact parts, multi-language HMI, zipper or valve modules) may add 5–10 days. Sea freight transit: SE Asia 7–14 days, Middle East 18–25 days, Europe 30–40 days.
Can I run a sample test before commitment?
Yes. Ship 2–5 kg of your product (whole-bean coffee, loose-leaf tea, protein powder, infant formula, etc.) plus 50 sample flat-bottom bags to our Shantou factory. ShengWei runs a packing test on the actual SW-D / SW-L / SW-Y machine matching your spec, records video of the fill cycle, and shares results with recommended speed and accuracy settings. Reach our sales team via the contact page for the shipping address.
