Whole-Bean Coffee
Specialty whole-bean and ground coffee. The side-gusset bag with one-way degassing valve is a common premium-coffee format — the gusset gives a rigid rectangular face for full-color print while the valve releases CO2 from fresh-roasted beans without letting oxygen in. When to choose gusset vs alternatives
Side-gusset is the format for heavy, large-volume retail SKUs where the bag must stand at full weight without deforming. But for premium shelf presence at smaller fill weights, stand-up pouches or flat-bottom box pouches deliver stronger retail face. Honest trade-off below.

Can these machines handle large pet-food bags?
Yes — the SW-D320 (180–320 mm bag width) handles gusset bags up to 5 kg fill weight within its 30–5000 g range. We recommend 14-head combination weigher for fastest fill cycle on heavy bags. Tell our engineers your maximum bag weight at quote stage; you can also visit our Guangdong factory.
Can I add a one-way degassing valve for whole-bean coffee?
Yes. Degassing valves are pre-applied to the bag by your bag converter (not by the filling machine) before bags are loaded into the machine magazine. SW-D rotary fillers fill premade gusset bags with or without a converter-applied valve; the bag width must fit the model range (SW-D200 80–200, SW-D250 110–250, SW-D320 180–320 mm). Specify "valve-ready bag" with your converter and ship samples to us for sealing test before commitment.
What’s the difference between side-gusset and stand-up pouch?
Both are premade flexible bags filled on the same SW-D / SW-L / SW-Y machine family, but the cross-section differs. Stand-up pouch has a D-shaped base from a folded bottom gusset that opens when filled — ideal for 30 g to 2 kg retail. Side-gusset bag has a rectangular cross-section from folded side panels — ideal for 250 g to 10 kg heavy or large-volume product. Can I add a zipper to a side-gusset bag?
Yes — resealable zippers are common on dry pet food, premium grain, and specialty coffee gusset bags. The zipper is added to the bag by your bag converter; the SW-D / SW-L machines accept an optional zipper-opening device; with it, the machine opens the zipper, fills below it, and reseals the top. What films and laminates work for gusset bags?
PET/AL/PE foil laminate is standard for whole-bean coffee gusset bags (high oxygen barrier needed for fresh-roasted beans). Kraft / PE laminate handles pet food, charcoal, rice, grain (kraft signals natural / organic positioning). Multi-layer PE for heavy-duty industrial gusset bags (fertilizer, garden products). Recyclable mono-PE is increasingly used for sustainable retail SKUs — ship sample bags to our contact for a sealing test before order. How does cost-per-bag compare to stand-up pouch?
Side-gusset bags typically cost more per unit than equivalent stand-up pouches at the same fill weight, because gusset bags use more film (the gusset folds add material) and require more complex bag-converter operations. The cost premium is justified for heavy-fill SKUs where stand-up pouch would deform under weight, or premium-positioning SKUs where the rectangular shelf face commands a higher retail price.
