What product categories use back-seal pillow pouches?
Back-seal pillow is the workhorse of high-volume retail — the format you see on every supermarket shelf for snacks, candy, frozen aisle, and instant single-serve. Lowest film cost per bag, highest production speed, lightweight to ship. Below are the four largest back-seal product categories on ShengWei vertical lines.
Chips & Crisps
Potato chips, kettle-cooked chips, tortilla chips, extruded snacks. The single highest-volume back-seal product worldwide. Metalized foil laminate for oxygen barrier; nitrogen flush extends shelf life. SW-2030A multi-head weigher feeds the forming tube.
Candy & Confectionery
Wrapped hard candy, mixed gummies, chocolate pieces, jelly bites, marshmallows. SW-2030C tipping bucket handles irregular shapes that combination weighers struggle with. Transparent window in pouch face is standard for branded candy.
Frozen Vegetables
Frozen peas, mixed vegetables, edamame, corn, IQF blueberries. Freezer-grade film with strong cold-temperature seal integrity. SW-2030A or SW-B10 multi-lane depending on volume; cold-fill capable with chilled product hopper.
Drip Coffee Single-Serve
Pour-over drip coffee bags, instant coffee sticks, electrolyte sticks, single-serve cocktail mixes. Small foil-laminate pillow pouches at 5–15 g fill. SW-B10 ten-column or SW-2830B reciprocating drives high single-serve throughput.
Seven ShengWei vertical lines produce back-seal pillow pouches.
Two production tiers serve different volume needs. The SW-2030 Series covers single-lane production for general retail SKUs at 30–80 bags/min, with four filling-system variants. The High-Throughput Multi-Lane tier (SW-B10, SW-2830A, SW-2830B) parallelizes production for stick-pack and small-sachet SKUs at 60–400 bags/min total throughput.
Granule Filler
General-purpose back-seal vertical for granular products — chips, nuts, candy, sunflower seeds, dry snack mixes. Multi-head combination weigher feeds the forming tube via a vertical conveyor for ±1% accuracy on 50–1000 g fills.

When to choose back seal vs alternatives
Back-seal pillow wins on speed and cost per bag, but lacks shelf presence and reseal options. If your SKU needs to stand on shelf, hold a printable face for branding, or reclose between uses, a stand-up doypack or 3-side seal sachet is the better fit. Honest trade-off below.
Back-Seal Pillow Pouch
- Highest production speed (200+ bpm multi-lane)
- Lowest film cost per bag at high volume
- Standard format for chips, snack, candy, frozen
- Lightweight and compact for transport
- Single fin seam down the back, top & bottom seal

FAQ
What’s the difference between back-seal, fin-seal, and pillow pouch?
All three terms describe the same physical bag — a flat pillow-shaped pouch with a single seam running down the back. “Back-seal” describes the seam location; “fin-seal” describes the way the seam protrudes (a small fin); “pillow pouch” describes the overall puffed pillow shape. ShengWei machines are sold as “back-seal vertical” in catalogue language, but they produce what English-speaking buyers call fin-seal or pillow.
Can back-seal pouches be nitrogen-flushed for shelf life?
Yes — nitrogen flushing is a standard option on all 7 ShengWei back-seal machines. A nitrogen injection nozzle inside the forming tube displaces oxygen just before the bag is sealed, extending shelf life of chips, nuts, and oxygen-sensitive food by 3–5×. Add the optional MAP (modified atmosphere) module at quote stage; spec our Guangdong factory for the integration drawing.
What films and laminates work with back-seal pouches?
BOPP/CPP for entry-level SKUs, PET/PE for general retail, PET/AL/PE foil laminate for high-barrier (chips, coffee, frozen), metallized PET for premium snack, and recyclable mono-PE for sustainable lines. Thickness range 50–120 micron. Sealing temperature, jaw pressure, and dwell time are adjustable per film type via HMI — ship a sample film roll to our factory contact for a sealing test.
What’s the speed difference between SW-2030 and SW-B10?
SW-2030 single-lane runs 30–80 bags/min, suitable for general 50–1000 g retail bags. SW-B10 ten-column produces 200–400 sticks/min total throughput — that is, 20–40 sticks/min per lane × 10 lanes simultaneously. Pick SW-B10 when you have a single high-volume small-fill SKU (drip coffee, electrolyte stick) where parallelizing 10 lanes makes economic sense versus 10 separate single-lane machines.
Can I add a degassing valve to back-seal coffee bags?
Not on the back-seal pillow format — degassing valves require a flat printable face larger than typical back-seal can accommodate, and they are typically applied to stand-up pouches or gusseted bags by the bag converter. For drip coffee single-serve, the small back-seal pouch relies on full hermetic sealing of the foil laminate to maintain freshness for 6–12 months without a valve.
Lead time and payment terms?
25–35 working days from deposit to FOB Shantou for any of the 7 SW-2030 / SW-B10 / SW-2830 series machines — the same lead window we have held since ShengWei started building vertical lines in Guangdong over 20 years ago. Payment: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment by T/T. Custom configurations (special voltage, multi-language HMI, additional MAP nitrogen module) may add 5–10 days. Sea freight transit: SE Asia 7–14 days, Middle East 18–25 days, Europe 30–40 days.
What’s the typical cost per bag for back-seal?
Back-seal pillow has the lowest film cost of any flexible format at scale — typically USD 0.003–0.012 per bag for standard retail sizes, depending on film grade, print, MAP option, and order volume. Multi-lane machines like SW-B10 reduce labor cost per bag substantially compared to single-lane SW-2030 production at high volumes. Stick-pack at 5–10 g fill drops below USD 0.005 per bag at 100k+ bag orders.
Can I run a sample test before commitment?
Yes. Ship 2–5 kg of your product (chips, candy, frozen, drip-coffee grounds, etc.) plus a sample film roll to our Shantou factory. ShengWei runs a packing test on the actual SW-2030 / SW-B10 / SW-2830 machine matching your spec, records video of the run, and shares results with recommended speed, fill, and seal settings. Reach our sales team via the contact page for the shipping address.
