Stand-Up Pouch
Self-standing pouch with a bottom gusset that opens when filled — a common retail format for premium-shelf food and consumer goods. Ground coffee, pet treats, granola, dried fruit, laundry refills, cosmetic powders. Filled on premade bag (doypack) machines.
3 Side Seal Pouch
Flat sachet with three sealed edges and one folded edge — a low-film-cost flexible pack and the entry point for single-serve. Sugar packets, salt sachets, ketchup, ground spices, shampoo samples, hospitality condiments. Made on a 3-side-seal VFFS line.
4 Side Seal Pouch
Two film webs sealed on all four edges, enabling multi-lane stick-pack production. Single-serve instant coffee, sugar sticks, electrolyte and supplement powders, jelly sticks, sauce, lubricant sachets. Multi-lane VFFS machines run several lanes in parallel for high single-serve throughput — six lanes on the ShengWei SW-C6.
Back Seal Pouch
Single-film pillow pouch with a fin seal down the back plus top and bottom seals — the workhorse VFFS format with a low cost per bag. Chips, extruded snacks, nuts, candy, frozen vegetables, rice, pet treats. Reaches a maximum of 60 to 100 bags per minute on the single-lane SW-2030 series; multi-lane models run higher — see each model page for its rated speed.
Gusset Bag
Folded side panels expand into a rectangular cross-section, holding 100 g to 10 kg without the bag deforming. Whole-bean coffee with one-way valve, pet food kibble, charcoal, fertilizer, bulk grain, frozen vegetables. Made on VFFS machines fitted with a gusset former, or as a premade gusset bag.
Flat Bottom Pouch
Square-base pouch with five flat printable panels — a premium-shelf flexible format, visually closest to a rigid box on shelf. Specialty coffee, premium loose-leaf tea, protein powder, organic snack lines. Filled on premade bag machines with bottom-support fingers.
Zipper Pouch
Resealable press-to-close zipper module added to any premade-bag pouch — stand-up, 3-side seal, gusset, flat-bottom. The zipper is the closure, the bag underneath is whatever shape suits the product. Optional zipper-opening device on SW-D / L / Y premade-bag fillers; press-to-close zippers open automatically, slider and child-resistant zippers depending on the bag.

How to choose the right pouch in 4 questions.
Pouch selection is a four-question sequence. Each answer eliminates two or three formats and narrows the matching machine catalogue. Work through them in order before requesting a quote — it cuts our reply time in half.

Does the bag need to stand on shelf?
Yes (retail self-display) → Stand-Up Pouch, Flat Bottom, or Gusset Bag — all hold their own shape when filled.
No (cartoned or strip-hung) → 3 Side Seal, 4 Side Seal, or Back Seal pillow. -

What is the fill weight per bag?
Under 30 g → 3 or 4 Side Seal sachet, stick pack.
30 g – 1 kg → most base formats viable; pick by shelf strategy and bag cost.
1 kg – 10 kg → Gusset Bag — smaller styles deform under heavy fill. -

What is the target output?
Under 60 bags/min → premade bag formats (Stand-Up, Flat Bottom) work; bag cost is the trade-off.
Above 60 bags/min → switch to VFFS-formed bags (Back Seal, 3 / 4 Side Seal, Gusset). ShengWei premade bag fillers (SW-D / L / Y) are rated 16–50 bags/min. -

Do you need any structural add-ons?
Reclosable zipper → Stand-Up, Flat Bottom, or Gusset Bag (premade bag filler with the optional zipper-opening device).
One-way coffee valve → Stand-Up Pouch or Gusset Bag (valve pre-applied to the bag by your bag converter).

Three common sub-formats combine a base pouch with a structural add-on or special seal pattern. None is a separate bag type — they are variations of the six base shapes above, produced on the same machine class with an optional accessory station.
Stick Pack
Long narrow sachet — back-seal or 4 Side Seal — typically 20 mm × 100 mm, for single-serve instant coffee, sugar, electrolyte drinks, jelly sticks, and supplements. Across the industry, multi-lane VFFS machines run many lanes in parallel — peak output above 1,000 sticks per minute on a wide-frame line; ShengWei multi-lane machines run six or ten lanes.
SW-2830A Jelly Stick VFFS →K-Seal Stand-Up
Premium doypack variant with diagonally cut and sealed bottom corners — wider, more stable base than a standard stand-up. Popular in Northern European and Japanese retail for premium coffee, single-origin tea, and high-end pet treats. Same machine class as standard doypack — only the bag converter differs.
Premade Bag Filler (K-Seal Ready) →Shaped / Die-Cut
Pouch cut to a non-rectangular outline — bottle silhouette, animal shape, custom logo cutout — for premium beverages, kids' snacks, and promotional or gift packaging. Always premade (die-cut at the converter), filled on a standard premade bag machine.

Three machine classes cover the live pouch guides: VFFS forms the bag from rollstock film and fills in one continuous pass, premade bag fillers load pre-converted bags from a magazine, and horizontal flow wrap (HFFS) wraps a pillow pouch around a discrete solid item. VFFS — From Rollstock Film
Forms the bag from a flat rollstock film, fills, and seals in one continuous cycle. Low film cost per bag and high line speed (up to 300 bpm on ShengWei multi-lane models), but limited to the bag styles a forming tube can produce.

Premade Bag Filler — Loads Converted Bags
Picks pre-converted bags from a magazine, opens, fills, and seals, with the optional zipper-opening device. Higher bag cost than VFFS but unlocks premium shapes — stand-up, flat bottom, K-seal, die-cut — that a forming tube cannot produce.

HFFS — Pillow Wraps Around Solid Product
Horizontal flow wrap (HFFS) wraps a back-seal pillow pouch around a discrete solid item — biscuit, soap bar, cake, finished ice pop, hardware. Not a pouch filler in the granular or liquid sense, but the common machine class for unit-pack confectionery and bakery.

Pouch film and laminate reference.
The pouch shape constrains the film thickness and laminate structure you can run. Heavier bags (gusset, flat bottom, large stand-up) need thicker laminates for panel rigidity; light sachets and stick packs use the thinnest single-layer films. Match the barrier to your product's shelf-life target — your bag converter will spec the exact lamination.
