Packaging Machine Price in 2026: Cost Ranges, Hidden Fees & Quote Checklist

Most automatic packaging machines made in China cost $1,600–$28,000 FOB. The spread comes from machine type, filling system, throughput, and add-ons. Small vertical sachet machines start under $3,000; premade-pouch lines and high-speed flow-wrap typically run $10,000–$25,000 before freight, duties, and installation.

Below: indicative FOB ranges for standard configurations built at our Shantou factory, plus a landed-cost calculator, three example budgets, and a 7-point quote checklist. Co-authored with Hellena Ji, our International Sales Manager.

Pricing Tables

Price by Machine Type (USD, FOB China)

Indicative ranges for standard configurations — your quote depends on the configuration you specify. These ranges apply only to the standard configurations and scope of supply listed on this page. Whether a quote comes in above or below them, align it item by item with the six cost drivers and the 7-point checklist below (metering system, product-contact materials, drive configuration, included services) before you compare prices.

Machine type Price range (FOB) Best for Budget warning
Vertical VFFS
Small sachet, single-format
$1,640 – $6,600
60–100 bags/min
Sugar sticks, salt, instant powder, small granules. Entry into automation. Entry-level configurations may use a generic PLC; confirm the brand in the quote.
Collar-type VFFS
Mid-volume multi-format
$10,580 – $17,200
Speed varies by model
Mid-volume granule, powder, and liquid in pillow pouches. Multi-product flexibility via dosing-system swap. Filler system is the biggest cost variable. Confirm whether the quote specifies an auger or a multi-head weigher.
Pillow pouch / flow wrap
Solid items, horizontal
$5,150 – $10,000
Speed varies by model
Candy, biscuits, bars, frozen blocks. Horizontal wrap with film roll. High-speed models are a different series, not the same machine "turned up" — for example the SW-1200 three-servo machine, rated 50–1,200 pieces/min.
Premade bag (rotary)
Pre-made pouch, premium
$11,030 – $24,700
16–50 bags/min
Doypack, stand-up zipper, spout. Premium retail packaging from pre-made pouches. 8-station rotary is the workhorse; sub-$10k "premade bag" quotes usually mean refurbished machines or machines that are not 8-station rotary models.

Custom specialty machines (spout-pouch fillers, multi-lane high-speed liquid sachets) sit at $14,000–$28,000+ and are quoted case-by-case. For format-specific buyers, see our pouch-type guide and dedicated lineups for stand-up / Doypack, 3-side-seal, zipper pouch, and back-seal pillow pouches.

Six Drivers

What Moves a Quote Up or Down

Six variables explain almost every price gap between quotes. Use these to read any quote you receive — if a line item is missing, ask about it. Form-fill-seal background covers the basic machine taxonomy.

1

Control system

PLC brand options include generic Chinese, Mitsubishi, Omron and Siemens; the brand specified changes the price of that line item. Matters most for after-sales — Siemens has the deepest global service network.

2

Product-contact materials

SUS304 stainless steel is standard. 316L (food / pharma grade) adds noticeable cost. Confirm the quote specifies SUS304 for product-contact parts.

3

Servo drive count

Single-servo is entry-tier. Dual-servo improves accuracy. Three- or multi-servo (high-speed pillow, multi-lane VFFS) cost more but carry higher rated speeds.

4

Dosing / weighing

Common options are volumetric cup, auger / pump, linear weigher (4–6 head) and multi-head weigher (10–14 head). Confirm which one the quote specifies, and choose by product, not by price.

5

Throughput target

Standard (under 60 bags/min) is the base. Mid (60–150) needs reinforced mechanics; high (150+) needs servo platform. Different machine series, not the same machine "turned up".

6

Optional add-ons

N₂ flush (+$450), in-line metal detector (+$2,700), output conveyor (+$400), voltage conversion (+$200–$500). A date / batch printer is an optional add-on — confirm it as a line item on the PI.

FOB Line-Item Breakdown

What's Included in an FOB Price — and What Isn't

FOB ("Free On Board") means the price covers the machine, packed and loaded onto the vessel at the Chinese port. Everything beyond that is on the buyer. See Incoterms reference for full FOB, CIF, and DDP definitions.

✓ Typically included

  • The machine built to the spec on the PI
  • Standard spare-parts kit (6–12 months of wear parts)
  • Pre-shipment video test with your product samples
  • Remote installation support (video call)
  • Operator training (remote): setup, sealing, fault diagnosis
  • 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects
  • Fumigation-free plywood crate (ISPM 15)

✗ Not included — budget separately

  • Sea freight — $200–$3,000 per machine
  • Import duties / VAT — rate depends on destination · HS heading 8422
  • Marine insurance (1–2% of declared value)
  • On-site installation: installation engineer fee and travel are quoted separately
  • 3-year spare-parts upgrade kit (~$1,000)
  • Packaging film (source locally per recommended spec)
  • Voltage conversion equipment if facility voltage differs
Landed Cost Worked Example

$15K FOB Becomes $18K–$25K Landed

The FOB sticker is roughly 70–85% of what the machine actually costs to start running. Below is the realistic math for a typical $15,000 FOB premade-bag machine shipping to a low-duty destination.

Machine FOB ShantouMachine + standard accessories
$15,000
+ Sea freightDepends on crate volume and route
$1,500–$2,500
+ Marine insurance1–2% of declared CIF value
$150–$300
+ Import duty (HS 8422)EU duty is low and varies by HS code — check TARIC; US imports of China-origin machinery currently carry additional duties (including 25% under Section 301) — check current rates with your customs broker; not included here
Low (varies)
+ VAT / GST on CIFReclaimable in most B2B regimes — cash-flow item
$0–$3,500
+ Customs broker + port feesOne-time per shipment
$300–$700
+ Optional on-site installInstallation engineer fee and travel are quoted separately (range shown is illustrative); skip if confident with remote commissioning
$1,500–$3,000
Realistic landed cost≈ FOB + 20–67% depending on duty regime and install choice
$18,000–$25,000

Run this same math for every quote on your shortlist. A factory with a slightly higher FOB but a transparent forwarder often lands cheaper than a low-FOB factory routing through a markup-heavy logistics partner.

Payback Examples

Three Illustrative Payback Examples

Three illustrative examples, not customer records: payback = landed cost ÷ monthly labor saving. They assume single-shift operation and the labor cost shown, and exclude financing, training time, and unplanned downtime. Lower-wage markets see longer payback — see caveat below.

Example A · premade bag

SW-D200 premade bag, granule

Landed $25,000
Payback ~1 month
  • Assumes 5 manual packers per shift are replaced
  • Assumed labor cost: $5,000 / month / person
  • Headcount-only saving: $25,000 / month

Example B · collar-type VFFS

Collar-type VFFS

Landed $16,500
Payback ~1.4 months
  • Assumes 3 manual packers per shift are replaced
  • Assumed labor cost: $4,000 / month / person
  • Headcount-only saving: $12,000 / month

Example C · high-speed pillow

SW-1200 three-servo high-speed

Landed $25,850
Payback ~1.4 months
  • Assumes 5 manual packers per shift are replaced
  • Assumed labor cost: $3,800 / month / person
  • Headcount-only saving: $19,000 / month

Read these numbers carefully. Payback assumes the labor cost shown is accurate and that labor is the only constraint being relieved. The arithmetic scales with wages: where monthly labor costs are a fraction of these, the same machine takes proportionally longer to pay back — and in lower-wage markets the gain is consistency, night-shift capacity, and reject-rate reduction, not pure headcount savings. Sanity-check the math against your own wages, shift count, and overheads before signing a PI.

Quote Checklist

What Any Factory Needs to Quote You Accurately

The most common reason quotes from different factories look wildly different is that the buyer sent different information to each one. Copy this 7-point checklist into your inquiry and you'll get apples-to-apples quotes back — works for any reputable Chinese factory, not just us.

Why the accuracy target matters: it decides whether a linear weigher is enough or a multi-head weigher is needed — and a factory can only judge that when the inquiry states the actual product, the actual bag size, and the actual accuracy target. When buyers send us these seven points up front, we usually return a written PI within one business day.

  1. 1. Product to be packed — type, flowability (free-flowing / sticky / abrasive / wet), bulk density, particle size or viscosity. Ship a 1–2 kg sample if possible.
  2. 2. Bag style and dimensions — pillow / stand-up / 3-side-seal / 4-side-seal / spout, plus length × width × thickness in mm, and whether the bag is from film roll or pre-made.
  3. 3. Target throughput — bags per minute (or per hour), and whether that's continuous output or peak-hour. Over-specifying speed inflates price.
  4. 4. Filling accuracy required — your precision class (standard or high-precision) and the net-content standard you must meet; high-precision or mixed/irregular product usually points to a multi-head weigher or specialised dosing. Exact ± figures are product- and test-specific, so treat any number a vendor quotes as a claim to verify on your product.
  5. 5. Destination country and voltage — 220V / 380V, 50Hz / 60Hz. Affects motor selection and contactor sizing. Wrong voltage at PI = expensive rework.
  6. 6. Required add-ons — date / batch printer (almost always yes), N₂ flush, metal detector (HACCP / BRC export), output conveyor, auto-feeder.
  7. 7. Compliance requirements — CE (Europe), FDA food contact (US), ATEX (explosive dust), HACCP / BRC. List anything your end customer or local regulator requires.

With these seven points, a serious factory should turn around a written PI within 24–48 hours — including FOB price, lead time, add-on line items, and recommended shipping route. Quotes that come back faster than 4 hours and shorter than half a page are templates, not engineered responses.

Common Buyer Mistakes

Five Mistakes to Avoid When Buying From a Chinese Factory

These five mistakes account for most of the bad reviews you'll read about importing packaging machinery. They aren't specific to any factory — they're general procurement risks. Knowing them lets you ask the right diligence questions of any supplier you're evaluating.

01

The machine delivered doesn't match the PI spec

What goes wrong: Lower-grade components substituted (generic PLC instead of Siemens, 201 steel instead of 304), missing options, wrong model number.

How to prevent: Require a 5–10 minute pre-shipment video showing your specific machine running with your product samples. Sign off the video before crating.

02

Mid-order price hikes after deposit clears

What goes wrong: "Steel prices went up", "voltage change adds cost", "we forgot to quote the conveyor". Deposit is non-refundable, so you're locked in.

How to prevent: Ensure the PI locks every line item — base machine, add-ons, voltage, freight terms, payment milestones. If the factory won't commit in writing, walk.

03

Supplier becomes unreachable after deposit

What goes wrong: Shell company, personal bank account, ghost address. By the time the deposit lands, the "factory" doesn't exist or never did.

How to prevent: Wire to a registered company name, never a personal account. Verify business registration on the Chinese commercial registry. Schedule a factory visit for orders over $20k.

04

Slow or non-existent after-sales response

What goes wrong: 48-hour ticket reply, support engineer doesn't speak your language, spare parts take 6+ weeks.

How to prevent: Ask before purchase: "What is your email response SLA? Where are spare parts shipped from? How long do common wear parts take?" A factory with a real after-sales team answers in specifics; a supplier gives vague answers on configuration, materials or service scope.

05

Machine arrives but can't pack your actual product

What goes wrong: Spec sheet looked right, but your real-world product (sticky dough, abrasive granules, oversized bar) jams the dosing system. Refund disputes are slow and rarely succeed.

How to prevent: Before signing the PI, ship 1–2 kg of your actual product plus a sample pouch. Require a recorded sample test on the proposed model. This single step prevents most post-installation regrets.

Logistics & Terms

Shipping, Payment, and Lead Time (ShengWei specifics)

Sea freight estimate

Crate volume depends on the model — ask for the packing list (crate dimensions and gross weight) with your quote to price freight. FOB Shantou by default; CIF / DDP via forwarding partners on request. Typical single-machine freight: $200–$3,000 by region — rates change weekly.

  • Southeast Asia7–14 days
  • Middle East18–25 days
  • Europe28–35 days
  • North America (West Coast)18–25 days
  • Latin America30–40 days
  • Africa25–40 days

Payment terms

  • 30% deposit, 70% before shipment via T/T — default
  • L/C payment can be discussed on request; terms depend on the order and the destination country and are confirmed by your sales contact in the quotation

Lead time

15–30 working days from deposit to ex-works for standard configurations. Deep-custom builds run longer — up to 45 working days, depending on complexity. Faster delivery is occasionally possible, subject to factory capacity and product complexity, and is confirmed by your sales contact.

Volume discounts

  • 2–3 units (same model) → ~5% off machine
  • 4+ units → negotiable, typically 7–12%
  • Repeat customers → case-by-case, prior pricing honoured where possible

"The lowest price is only useful after the machine matches your real product. A slightly higher quote can be the better buy if it includes the right filling system, stable components, clear spare-parts support, and a factory team that responds after installation."

"Send us your checklist and we will reply with a written machine recommendation, FOB price, required add-ons, lead time, and shipping notes typically within one business day. If your product is unusual, we may ask for samples first. It is better to confirm the packing result before you pay a deposit than to solve the problem after the machine arrives."

Buyer Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the price ranges negotiable, or is the FOB number fixed?

FOB numbers in this guide are indicative ranges for standard configurations — not list prices and not floors. Negotiation typically happens around (a) volume — multi-unit orders are quoted case by case; (b) component spec — accepting a Mitsubishi PLC instead of Siemens changes the price of that line item; (c) timing — slow-season orders may absorb voltage conversion or printer add-ons. We do not negotiate by cutting warranty coverage or skipping the pre-shipment video test.

Why are some Alibaba quotes significantly cheaper than this guide's ranges?

Quotes differ mainly in what they cover. Ask what configuration, product-contact materials, drive count and included services the quote covers, and compare line by line against the items in this guide. Also ask for the factory address, business registration, and a visit invitation.

Why is Chinese packaging machinery cheaper than European or Japanese equivalents?

Labor and overhead, not component quality. A comparable European-built VFFS retails for €60,000–€120,000; the same throughput and component spec from a quality Chinese factory is $5,000–$15,000. Engineering uses the same global component brands (Siemens, Panasonic, Schneider, AirTAC). The saving is in assembly labor and overhead, not in materials or warranty coverage.

Is Alibaba Trade Assurance safer than direct T/T to the factory?

Trade Assurance adds platform-side escrow until you confirm shipment, which protects against deposit-then-disappear risk on first-time orders below roughly $10,000. For larger orders or established supplier relationships, direct T/T to the factory's registered company account is the norm — Trade Assurance fees become material and the platform dispute resolution is slower than direct factory communication. Verify the receiving bank account name matches the registered manufacturer (not a personal account or off-platform middleman) before wiring.

What happens if my lead time is missed — is there a penalty clause?

Most Chinese factory contracts include a lead-time term but not an automatic late-delivery penalty. If your downstream commitment depends on a specific ship date, add a clause to your PI specifying the daily late-shipment liquidated damages and your right to cancel if the delay exceeds a threshold (commonly 30 days). Reputable factories will accept reasonable clauses; pushback usually indicates capacity uncertainty, which is itself useful information.

What does a 2-year manufacturer warranty actually cover?

Manufacturing defects under normal operation — main frame, servo motors, PLC, HMI. Wear parts (sealing strips, suction cups, heating elements, vacuum pump seals) are excluded and covered by the spare-parts kit shipped with the machine. Reputable factories dispatch in-warranty replacement parts within a few business days, typically without additional charge — confirm the exact SLA in your PI.

What if my product is unusual — will the machine actually pack it?

This is the most important pre-order check. Ship 1–2 kg of your actual product plus a sample pouch to the factory before signing. A serious factory will run a test on the proposed model, record the test on video, and only confirm the order if the test passes. Sample inbound shipping is sometimes absorbed on larger orders — ask in your inquiry.

Should I visit the factory before ordering?

For first-time orders above $20,000, yes — and most reputable factories actively welcome visits. The visit lets you verify the factory exists, see other machines in production, and meet the engineers who will support you after delivery. ShengWei's Shantou factory (11,000 m²) accepts customer visits any business day — see the factory page for the visitor process and pickup coordination.

What if multiple quotes come back with different filling systems recommended?

Different filling systems for the same product usually mean the factories ranked your product's characteristics differently. Ask each supplier to justify the recommendation against three criteria: filling accuracy at your target speed, behaviour with your specific product sample (sticky / abrasive / hygroscopic), and changeover time if you run multiple SKUs. The right system is often the one chosen after a recorded sample test, not the one chosen on paper specs alone.

How do I avoid getting stuck with a machine I can't sell to my customers?

List compliance requirements (CE, FDA food contact, ATEX, HACCP / BRC) on your inquiry from day one. Ask the factory to confirm in writing which certifications the machine carries. For food-contact applications, request the material certificates for product-contact surfaces. Buying without confirming compliance is the most expensive way to learn what your local regulator requires.
